SAE 1023 is a carbon steel of relatively low manganese content (0.30-0.60%); therefore, its hardenability, hardness and strength are somewhat lower than that of steels of higher manganese content at comparable carbon levels. It has good machinability, good workability (hot or cold) and good weldability. It is used in the annealed, hot worked, normalized or water-quenched-and-tempered condition for many automotive and general industry applications. It may be used in the carburized condition or without carburizing. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness.
