AISI 1080 is a plain carbon steel containing nominally 0.80% carbon; it has relatively low hardenability. It may be used in the as-rolled, annealed, normalized or liquid-quenched-and-tempered condition, depending on the required properties. Normally it is hardened by austenitizing and quenching in oil; however, it may be quenched in water if precautions are taken to prevent cracking. AISI 1080 is recommended for general-purpose tools, springs and machinery parts that require high hardness and high resistance to wear. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness.
