CARPENTER STAINLESS TYPE 440A is a high-carbon chromium steel designed to provide stainless properties at high hardness. It has sufficient corrosion resistance in the annealed condition to permit its use in mild environments. In some respects it behaves similarly to tool steels. It can be austenitized and quenched to a hardness of Rockwell C56. Its applications include dental and surgical instruments, cutlery and valve parts.
