SAE 8655 is a triple-alloy steel that is normally hardened by quenching in oil; however, it may water quenched if sufficient precautions are taken with parts having drastic dimensional changes or sharp corners. Its good hardenability and resultant hardness and strength make it suitable for many tools and machine parts such as wrenches, shear blades, shafts, springs and gears.
